Model 800 MHz, 5.5 GHz (CW, PW) exposure to rabbit eyes and analysis of cataract formation

Rabbits were exposed to 5.5 GHz (CW & PW - 5 usec pulse duration, 0.001 duty cycle) MW at various power outputs and for various times up to 60 minutes and analyzed for cataract formation. The threshold for cateracts was not given in SAR, but was ~ 700 milliwatts for 15 minutes or 1000 milliwatts for 2 minutes. There did not seem to be a significant difference between the effects of CW and PW exposure. Acute inflammatory reactions of the cornea, conjunctiva, iris, and ciliary body were also observed at these exposure levels. In other studies, similar effects of 800 MHz to 6.3 GHz (CW) exposures were observed.
