Model Measurement of mobile phone (CW, GSM, CDMA) field strengths in the hospital environment

Detailed review of issues and recommendedations relevent to the issue of mobile wireless equipment operating compatibly within hospitals and around potentially sensitive medical devices. An earlier study analyzed hospital environments from 5 hospitals for interference sources. Significant electric fields were detected in the 400 MHz region (radios) and in the 800 MHz region (cell phones), as well as in the 50-200 MHz region. Specific testing showed that at distances of 25 cm, 150 & 450 MHz - 5 watt radios could produce field strengths ~40 V/m and 800 MHz - 0.6 watt (average) cell phones could produce field strengths of~10-15 V/m. These field strenght values exceed current IEC recommended immunity levels for critical care medical devices.
