Model 50Hz (PEMF) exposure to mice and analysis of cancer progression and immune function (cell line injection bioassays)

Wistar mice were exposed to 50Hz steep pulsed electric fields (PEMFs) and analyzed for cancer progression and immune function. The authors report exposure increased NK cell activity and TNF-alpha levels, and increased populations of TH-1 cells and decreased TH-2 cells. Angiogenesis and progression and metastatic activity of implated tumors were also decreased. In a related study, nude mice injected with a human ovarian tumor cell line were exposed as above to 50 Hz PEMF fields. The authors report decreased tumor expression of tissue factor (TF - a coagulant factor and indicator of invasion and metastasis) with exposure as well as increased thrombosis and necrosis which the authors suggest may reduce tumor invasion and metastasis
