Model 75 Hz (pulsed ELF) stimulation of volunteers prior to trans cranial mangnetic stimulation

Volunteers (n = 22) were exposed to a 75 +/- 2 Hz pulsed ELF (pulse duration 1.3 msec) for 45 minutes using a custom coil (IGEA S.p.A) at the level of the forehead. The peak magnetic field was 1.8 +/- 0.2 mT and the peak E-field was 3 +/- 1 mV. Following pulsed magnetic field exposure, the authors stimulated motor evoked potentials (MEP) in subjects using trans cranial magnetic stimulation with a large single pulse from a coil over the right motor cortex. The authors report that sensorimotor processing during TEM was increased following the pulsed magnetic exposure from the IGEA device (140.2 +/- 7.8 % of TEM stimulation alone). The authors suggest that the pulsed magnetic field may interact with slutamatergic synapses and signaling pathways, although the impact on congnitive function was not known.
