Model ELF (10-50 Hz) to humans and frog retina and analysis of induced magnetophosphenes (perception of visual light)

Human subjects were exposed to 10-50 Hz ELF at 0-40 mT (of the type used for heating in welding and steel industries) to induce magnetophosphenes (visual light phenomena in the eyes). The authors report typical threshold values as a function of frequency at 20-25 Hz, with differences between volunteers in detection of color. In related studies, frog retina were also exposed to these fields and retinal activity measured from the ganglion cell layer using microelectrodes. The authors conclude that magnetophosphenes are generated in the retina and in the same channels normally propagating signals induced by light.
