Model 849 and 1763 MHz mobile phone exposure and effects on DNA damage in isolated lymphocytes via comet assay

Peripheral lymphocytes were isolated from volunteers (n = 20) both before and after mobile phone use for 4 hours and compared for differences in DNA damage using the Olive comet assay technique (tail moment, tail DNA, tail length). Mobile phone use history was also assessed by questionnaire. A subsequent study using 32 male volunteers using a similar study design to look at DNA damage and mobile phone use was also performed. The authors preliminarily report a significant difference before and after mobile phone use in comet tail length and comet moment in lymphocytes, T-cells, B-cells, and granulocytes.

Exposure in these studies is very questionable; apparently mobile phone exposure in the laboratory was performed simply by letting the volunteers use a mobile phone hooked to the network with unknown power control level and unknown DTx activity. Further, the type of mobile phone also does not appear to have been consistent (different handsets used by different volunteers in the various laboratory studies) and SAR between different handsets can vary significantly.
